Recap of The Shootout at West Oaks
December 2010 from FloridaHoops.com
The schools play outside of the jurisdiction of the Florida High School Activities Association. While some may choose to call them “Renegades”, the fact is these schools believe that they have a different mission when it comes to education and the role that sports play in that mission. However you choose to view them, the bottom line is the programs in the Sunshine Independent Athletic Association have some very good teams and players on those teams. The Shootout at West Oaks provided us with a chance to see many of these programs in one place this past weekend.
The Rock School out of Gainesville has the most state-wide recognition, having just left the FHSAA this year. The team is filled with talented players especially in the freshmen and sophomore classes. Against Florida Christian Institute of Fort Myers, The Rock’s top performer was 6’0 freshman guard Mitchell Wilbekin. He is one of the few players regardless of class that can consistently score from mid-range off the dribble while being contested by the defense. On top of that, he is smart when it comes to shot selection and doesn’t try to force what clearly isn’t there. A point guard that can score, Wilbekin is a solid ball-handler vs. pressure, makes good decisions with the basketball and throws catchable passes. Defensively he works hard but will need to add strength and increase his lateral foot speed both of which will certainly come with age.
The Rock’s 6’7 soph Alain Chigha didn’t knock down shots like we have seen in the past but his rebounding and his defense more than compensated…
Mitchell Wilbekin named to ESPNU Top 100 Watch List of c/o 2014
October 2010 from ESPN.com
Freshman PG Mitchell Wilbekin has been rated as the #38 player nationally in the ESPNU Top 100 Watch List. Mitchell had an excellent summer on the AAU circuit and was named to the All-Star Team at the prestigious freshman All-American Camp in Chicago. More recently, her received high-major reviews from scouts while attending Nike's THE Workout last month.
Benzon Named Top Sophomore at Dodge Florida Shootout
Octboer 18, 2010 from FloridaHoops.com
It’s tough to pick the top 2013 player in attendance at the Dodge. We’ll go with 6’4 wing Christian Benzon from Gainesville The Rock. A foreign exchange student from Denmark, he’s long, skilled, smart, and athletic. He didn’t show much range on his shot but he didn’t need to. Benzon pretty much got to the basket at will. He has good body control going full speed to the rim, understands how to make plays when handling the ball on the pick-and-roll, and finishes with either hand in traffic. His length makes him a dangerous defender on the wing and Benzon hustles to make up ground if beaten off the dribble. He too can grab the rebound on the defensive end and start the break on his own. Benzon is definitely a high-major prospect.
Chigha, Feidanga, Wilbekin, Harrell get praise at Nike's THEworkout
September 27, 2010
The consensus in basketball circles heading into this season is that The Rock would likely struggle this year with the loss of would be-senior guard Scottie Wilbekin who is now a freshman for the Florida Gators. But after Sunday's THEworkout presented by Nike Team Florida Director Tom Topping, it is clear that the future is bright.
With only four upperclassmen on the team's 12-man roster, The Rock is definitely loaded with young players. But luckily for second year Coach Justin Harden, those young players are both talented and experienced. As freshmen last season, Alain Chigha and Glenn Feidanga started 27 and 10 games, respectively. Mitchell Wilbekin started 18 games for the Lions as an 8th grader. That experience against good, older competition has helped these players develop and prepare for their roles on this year's squad.
"I had a lot of people come up to me Sunday and ask about my guys," said Coach Harden, who is also a coach in the Nike Team Florida system. "They were raving about Alain, Glenn, Mitchell and Austin (Harrell). I told them, I have some other young guys who
couldn't make it and they are good also." Harden expects it to be a fun season and looks forward to seeing how his players progress this year and over the next couple of years.
Check out what some of the scouts in attendance on Sunday had to say. Individual comments for each player can be found on his player profile page.
Wilbekin, Harrell Have Good Showings at Fab-Frosh Camp
July 15, 2010
Freshmen Mitchell Wilbekin and Austin Harrell were among 150 rising freshman from around the country invited to participate in the 2010 Freshman All-American Camp held this year at the Chicago Bulls practice facility in Chicago, IL July 2-4. They join former TRS standout guard and current Florida Gator Scottie Wilbekin as the only players in school history to be invited to the event. Scottie attended the camp in 2007 in Philadelphia, PA with the likes of top 2011 recruit Michael Gilchrist.
Mitchell, who has played on the varsity squad at The Rock since the 7th grade, is the first from The Rock to be invited to play in the Top 20 All-Star Game. Selected by various scouting personnel and camp administrators, Wilbekin scored 8 points in the game. "It was a great experience and opportunity. I had a lot of fun," said Mitchell. When asked about the talent at the camp, Mitchell said, "There are some really good players out there. I have played against some of them in AAU when I was younger, so it was good to see how everyone has developed over the years."
Harrell, who sat out last season due to an injury, has been on the varsity team since he was in 7th grade also. Harrell had a good showing at the camp as one of only 3 players from the state of Florida who attended the camp. Playing most of the time at point guard, former TRS coah Svend Wilbekin, who attended the camp with son Mitchell and Harrell, said, "Austin played well considering he sort of played out of position at the point. He is more naturally an off guard who can penetrate to get his shot going to the basket, but showed some great ball handling ability at the point position."
Rey Velez and Ayotunde Oyeniyi Accept Scholarship Offers
July 8, 2010
Two recent graduates of The Rock School have accepted scholarship offers to attend college on athletic scholarships.
Rey Velez, a captain in 2009-2010 and starter for the 2009 Final Four team, has earned the opportunity to attend and play at Inter American University in San German, Puerto Rico. Velez averaged 6.4 points and 3.6 rebounds for the Lions his senior season and was named Defensive Player of the Year by the coaching staff. "Rey was a good team player. He is an unselfish player who does the small things that coaches need."
Ayotunde Oyeniyi, who came to The Rock from Nigeria for his senior season, signed to attend and play for Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey (20 minutes from NYC). At 6'9 Oyeniyi started at center for the Lions during the handful of games he was eligible to play in. Oyeniyi also battled through plantar fascitis in both of his feet throughout the entire school year. "The thing with AY is that he just didn't get enough exposure. He has a great upside in basketball and already possesses some of the tools needed to be effective at the next level. The thing I appreciate the most about AY is that he never doubted if God was going to come through for him with a scholarship. He has great character and faith for young man," said Coach Harden.
With two more players signing, the Lions now have 4 players from their 2009-2010 roster expected to play college basketball next year. The Rock boys basketball program has now produced 14 collegiate student-athletes at the NCAA Division I, Division II and NAIA Division I levels.
Former TRS Standout to Transfer Colleges
June 20, 2010
Former standout forward Patrick Konan from the class of 2009 is transferring to the University of New Hampshire. As a freshman, Konan attended Liberty University in Virginia and played for long time college coach Dale Layer this past season. Konan started 24 of 31 games for the Flames last season averaging 6.9 points and 4.4 rebounds.
Konan will transfer to UNH and is required to red-shirt this season due to NCAA rules. UNH plays in the America East Conference and Konan will likely have the opportunity to compete against another former TRS standout Moussa Camara who plays for Binghamton.
"I am really excited about UNH. I liked Liberty and appreciate all that Coach Layer did for me and I had a great opportunity to start as a freshman. When UNH recruited me after my release from Liberty, they were really excited about possibly getting me. And then when I went to visit, they were excited. And when I committed to them, they were so excited and that really made me happy because it made me feel like they really wanted me to be a part of their program," said Konan. "So I am excited about the possibility of playing the wing there and finishing my career there."

Kingdom of the Sun Tournament - Individual Standouts
December 27, 2008 excerpts from FloridaHoops.com
"Known far and wide as one of the top tournaments
in the country, the 35th version of the Kingdom of the Sun kicked
off in Ocala, Florida the day after Christmas. Coach Jim Haley does
a tremendous job of bringing in teams that are championship contenders
in their respective states as well as some of the top underclassmen
talent in the country. This year’s event was no different."
Only a sophomore, 6’2 Scottie Wilbekin of
Gainesville (FL) The Rock School does a great job of controlling
a basketball game. He understands how to effectively use his dribble
to break the press, pushes the ball when needed and slows tempo
when necessary, and keeps his teammates involved. Offensively,
he sees the court very well, makes great decisions with the basketball
and can create his own shot, pulling up off the dribble for mid-range
jumpers and floaters when he gets into the lane. He had a great
forty foot left-handed bounce pass on the break that brought the
crowd to its feet. Wilbekin hits free throws and threes and on
the defensive does an excellent job of moving his feet. He is
certainly a strong candidate for top 100 player in the class of
2011.
6’5 junior wing Patrick Konan of The Rock
School is an interesting case. He’s listed as a junior as
he is playing his third year of high school basketball. However,
age wise he will be ineligible in Florida next season so the future
is a little cloudy on the academic front. Basketball-wise there
is a lot to like about him. Konan has a strong frame, is very
athletic, shoots it well from the arc and in and finishes great
around the basket. He threw a really nice pass to a cutter for
a basket and had an acrobatic finish with his left (off) hand
in traffic. His dribbling could use improvement but he is certainly
one for mid-majors to keep an eye on.

The Rock Opens Season with #3 Ranking
November 24, 2008
Florida Hoops' preseason rankings were released recently and The
Rock is listed as the #3 team in Class 1A behind Zion Lutheran (Deerfield
Beach) and Orlando Christian Prep.
The Rock was also listed in the state's top 25 all-classification
rankings at #24.
TRS Players listed in Top 25 Dynamic Inside-Outside
Duo
November 19, 2008 excerpts from FloridaHoops.com
"In basketball, one of the key things coaches strive
to reach is balance on the offensive end. They want to be able to
score inside as well as outside so as to put the defense at a disadvantage.
The following schools are well on their way to finding that balance
as they each have quality players on the interior and the perimeter."
School: The Rock
Inside: Vlad Kondratyev, 6’8 Sr
Outside: Scottie Wilbekin, 6’0 So
Comments: Vlad is a rock solid interior player with good scoring
moves around the basket and has the range to step out and knock
down twelve to fifteen foot jump shots with consistency. Wilbekin
has a high basketball IQ and an accurate jumper, particularly
off the dribble from mid-range.
TRS Duo listed in Top 25 Florida Front Courts
November 19, 2008 excerpts from FloridaHoops.com
It’s time to take a look at some of the better frontcourts
in the state this coming season. While it’s good to have great
guards, with size up front winning is an uphill battle. Like the
list of backcourts, this list is by no means comprehensive and in
no particular order." School: The Rock
Frontcourt: 6’5 Jr Patrick Konan; 6’8
Sr Vlad Kondratyev
Strengths: Power, scoring
Question marks: Depth
Comments: Konan could eventually play the two in college but
at this level he is a three/four due to his strength, explosiveness,
and ability to get things done around the basket. He has improved
in all phases of the game as now he must be respected from deep
and is a much better ball-handler. Koudratev has good scoring
tools out to fifteen feet and is crafty when it comes to getting
the ball in the basket when he is around the rim. He moves well
up and down the court and works the glass hard on both ends.

Hoop Mountain Fall Exposure Classic at IMG Academy
October 4, 2008
excerpts from FloridaHoops.com
"The goal of taking Hoop Mountain to the front of the pack
for Florida is quickly becoming a reality. This weekend's event
at the Basketball Academy at IMG Academy makes an exclamation
point on the word talent."
Rounding out the 2009 standouts is The Rock School's 6'8"
center Vladyslav Kondratyev. Vlad has come a
long way since last I saw him. His footwork has improved and he
now displays a nice hook shot in the lane. He used both left and
right hooks on separate occasions but seems more comfortable with
his left. He worked hard down low and made some drop step moves
and showed he can knock down some jump shots as he steps away
from the basket. His foot speed is still a bit questionable if
Division I is in his future. But, he could make the right team
very happy playing the man in the middle or a power forward position.
He has a strong, solid frame and does seem to like being in the
post which is almost unusual in this day and age.
The Class of 2010 was well represented as there was a Barbarian
in the house. A nickname that described this young man's play
from an event last year, 6'5" Patrick Konan
from The Rock School has moved his game outside. Yes, he can still
play in the paint. Yes, he can still defend bigger, stronger players,
well within reason anyway. But, Patrick has found a jumpshot that
works from the three point line and he is not afraid to shoot
it. He can handle the ball well in traffic and showed a good ability
to make an assist or two to keep defenders guessing just what
he was going to do. His game has improved immensely over the last
year. It will be interesting to watch this young man over the
next two years.
The Class of 2011 featured more guard oriented type play and
The Rock School's 6'2" point guard Scottie Wilbekin
directs a team well. He can setup an offense and make sure good
things happen. He knocked some jump shots and workd his way inside
and out as he hit some pull-up jumpers and finds the basket with
ease. He is active on the defensive end and really makes the offense
work. He did a nice job of making players uncomfortable and enabling
a player come from the back side for an easy steal and layup on
the other end quickly.
NIKE Team Florida - THEWorkout - Day Two (Fr/Soph)
September 28, 2008 Excerpts from FloridaHoops.com
Sunday brought day two of the NTFWorkout in Clearwater. This day
is reserved for sophomores and freshmen. This year, there was a
smattering of eighth graders as well. While this is one of the best
days to see because of the new names and faces it can also be the
most difficult to evaluate as the level of play suffers a noticeable
drop off from the Junior/Senior day.
Our final candidate for player of the day was 6’1 sophomore
point guard Scottie Wilbekin of The Rock School
in Gainesville. He may have had the most complete game of any
backcourt player on Sunday. His mastery of the fundamentals, court
vision, and ability to see plays as they are about to happen set
him apart from nearly all of the kids his age. Wilbekin also has
the ability to create for himself as well as others, whether it
is getting to the basket and finishing in traffic or pulling up
from mid-range off the bounce. Some may question his overall athleticism
but he certainly is at least above average in that category.
NIKE Team Florida - THEWorkout - Day One (Jrs/Srs)
September 27, 2008 Excerpts from FloridaHoops.com
For the third year, Tom Topping and his Nike Team Florida staff
put together THEWorkout and brought together some of the best players
from across the state. Nearly eighty players in the classes of 2009
and 2010 congregated at the North Greenwood Center in Clearwater
for a great day of instruction in skill development and highly competitive
games.
Maybe the most fundamentally sound post player on Saturday was
Vlad Kondratyev from The Rock in Gainesville.
The 6’8 senior has a nice turn-around jumper from both sides
of the line, uses his body well on post moves inside, and has
the skill to step out to mid-range and knock down shots. One move
that especially stood out was a spin move that left him under
the basket but he was able to muscle his defender away and power
up for a bucket. He’s only a little above average at best
athletically but he runs the court hard and rebounds well within
his area.
Maybe the most consistent player on his team over the three games
played today was Patrick Konan. The 6’5
junior wing from The Rock in Gainesville has done a real good
job of moving his game to the perimeter. He has an explosive first
step to the basket, explodes off the floor and finishes with contact.
Konan gets high on his jumper and while not always consistent,
it does have good form and is just a matter of repetition to reach
consistency. Maybe one his most under-rated attributes is his
ability to grab rebounds on the offensive end and convert over
bigger players.
Colleges Visit TRS Campus

AAU Tournament
Individual Standouts
April 11, 2008 (posted on FloridaHoops.com)
Known as "The Barbarian", NTF 16U's Patrick Konan
from The Rock in Gainesville had a very solid performance. The 6'5
WF has improved his jump shot and ball-handling skill to the point
that he is very difficult to guard. Add to that his top-shelf athleticism
and strength and Konan isn't far from being considered one of the
better players in the class. Konan plays hard all the time, attacks
the glass for rebounds, and can make some good passes on the move.
Once he improves his passing and defensive abilities, the sky could
be the limit.
A year younger than his NTF 16U teammates, 6'1 point guard Scottie
Wilbekin of The Rock more than fit in. A solid, fundamental
player, Wilbekin does a great job of protecting the ball against
aggressive defenders and traps, makes smart passes, and knocks
down open shots. Maybe the best part is he doesn't force the action
or try to do things he isn't capable of. While very athletic and
quick point guards can give him trouble on the defensive end,
he more than makes up for it with his high basketball IQ and ability
to run a team.
Showtime Ballers Shootout
Individual Standouts
April 1, 2008 (posted on FloridaHoops.com)
"The most skilled inside player for the Lee Bulls 17U this
weekend was Vladyslav Kondratyev, a 2009 6'8
big forward from The Rock School in Gainesville. "Vlad"
has some very nice scoring tools: a jump hook inside, a mid-range
jumper that he'll kiss off the glass from the wing, and range
to the arc given time to set his feet. He's got a fairly solid
frame and battles hard inside for rebounds on both ends. He struggles
a bit guarding players out on the perimeter and can be over-powered
inside but as he gets stronger the latter won't be much of an
issue."

Individual Standouts by Guy Power
March 9, 2008 (posted on FloridaHoops.com)
"Another underclassman in Class of 2009 6'8" Vladyslav
Kondratyev from The Rock School. Vladyslav was one of
those players that continued to get better as the day got longer.
He had quite a repetorie with outside shots, inside shots, and
just a good overall showing."

"Individual Standouts from the Diamondback
Challenge"
(Belleview High School, January 19)
"It’s rare that we highlight freshmen,
but Scottie Wilbekin of The Rock keeps performing
at a high level. Already the leader on the floor, the 6’0
point guard gets his teammates in the right spots and gives them
the ball where they can best use it. He does a good job using
head and ball fakes to get by his defender to make plays. Wilbekin’s
shot form is good and he knocked a few shots down off the bounce
and with a hand in his face. As he gets older he will get stronger
which is his main deficiency right now. He is certainly one of
the top players in the class of 2011."
